    ビリー・ホリデイ　Billie Holiday

    1915年4月7日にペンシルバニア州フィラデルフィアで生まれ、メリーランド州ボルティモアで育ちました。本名はエリノラ・フェイガン・ゴー( Eleanora Fagan Gough )と言います。父親はクラレンス・ホリデイと言い、ギター奏者で演奏旅行中にテキサス州ダラスで肺炎になり、病院に黒人の治療を拒否され亡くなりました。彼女は私生児として生まれましたが、小さい頃は、ルイ・アームストロングやベッシー・スミスの歌に親しんでいました。成長してからは、売春罪で投獄されたり、麻薬容疑で逮捕されたりと波乱の人生を送りました。1930年代にはニューヨークのクラブやカフェで歌い始め、やがてジョン・ハモンドに見出されて、1933年にはベニー・グッドマン楽団と共演しました。代表曲は「Billie's Blues」、「Blue Billy」などです。
    1959年7月17日に亡くなりました。
