    ドク・ワトソン　Doc Watson

    1929年3月3日にノース・キャロライナ州で生まれた盲目のブルーグラス系ギタリストです。本名はエセル・レーン・ワトソンです。民謡一家の一員として少年期から演奏を始め、南部一帯で次第に名前を知られるようになりました。彼はレコードでブラインド・レモン・ジェファーソン、ガス・キャノン、ミシシッピー・ジョン・ハート、スキップ・ジェイムズなどを聴いてギターを練習したそうです。フォーク研究家であり演奏家でもあったラルフ・リンズラーの招きで、ドクはたびたびニューヨークで演奏し、1963年にはニューポート民謡祭に出演して名声を決定的なものとしました。代表アルバムは、1963年にヴァンガードから発売された「Doc Watson」です。2012年にノース・キャロライナ州で死去しました。前週から自宅で倒れ入院していました。享年89歳でした。
