マミー・スミス　Mamie Smith

1883年5月26日にオハイオ州シンシナティで生まれました。1913年にハーレムに出て、多くのキャバレーに出演しました。1920年に黒人作曲家でありバンド・リーダーだったベリー・ブラッドフォード( Perry Bradford )に出会い、同年2月14日にオーケーで黒人女性歌手として史上初めての録音を行ないました。次いで同年8月に録音した「Crazy Blues」と「It's Right Here For Me」が大ヒットしました。その後もオーケーに約100曲ほどの録音を残しています。1929年にウオール街の株価大暴落から始まった大恐慌の津波は、黒人層を直撃し、レイス・レコードの売上げは激減し、多くの歌手達が消えていきました。マミー・スミスの録音歴も、1931年2月19日を最後にして途絶え、1946年9月16日にニューヨークで死去しました。
