アメリカ南北戦争終了後の1965年に、テネシー州ナッシュビルに黒人用のフィスク大学が創設されました。しかし、1967年3月、テネシー州が人種を問わない無料の公教育制度を敷くと、州立ではないフィスク大学は初等科の生徒を失って財政難に陥いります。音楽担任であり財務責任者であったジョージ・レオナード・ホワイト( George Leonard White )は、合唱団の中から歌唱力の優秀な生徒を集めて演奏旅行を行い、収入を得ようとしました。
紆余曲折の末に人気を呼び成功を収めたのですが、彼等が歌ったのは、白人達の口に合うようにクラシック風の編曲が施されたコンサート会場用の霊歌でした。
