    ビッグ・ジョー・ウィリアムズ　Big Joe Williams

    1903年10月16日にミシシッピー州クロフォード生まれました。本名はジョー・リー・ウィリアムズです。生涯を放浪のブルースマンとして、自作した奇怪な9弦ギターを片手に旅を続け、マンドリンのように響くギターと強く逞しい歌声を聞かせました。1935年、シカゴのブルーバードに初録音をしました。同年にシカゴでのウォッシュボード・ブルース・シンガーズでも吹き込んでいます。1941年にサニー・ボーイⅠをバックに配してブルーバードに「Highway 49」という傑作を吹き込みました。スライド・ギターでの演奏も素晴らしく、1951年にトランペットに吹き込んでいます。1950年代までは黒人向けレーベルに、1950年代末からは白人向けレーベルに吹き込みしています。他のブルースマン達にも数多く取り上げられている「Baby, Please Don't Go」は彼の作品です。1982年11月17日にミシシッピー州のメイシオで死去しました。
    1975年に一度来日しています。
